Perhaps in Another Lifetime…

A fleeting glance, then you turned away.
No flicker of recognition
lit your darkened eyes.
A brief pause—an interlude—
before you asked who I was.
A lifetime of shared time,
yet not a single memory remained.
Strange days.
Stranger still
when someone once so familiar
looks upon you as a stranger.
The sky hangs heavy,
the wind grazes my face
with quiet cruelty.
A numbness settles into my heart,
one I fear has come to stay.
So many have drifted through my life,
leaving their wounds behind,
yet none have wounded me
quite as deeply as you.
I don’t know if I will ever forgive you.
Once, when I was small,
I looked up at you,
larger than life.
I placed you on a pedestal
and believed you could never fall.
Now we stand here as strangers,
with only criticism, silence,
and the weight of unspoken regrets
between us.
Perhaps in another lifetime
we could have been friends,
since in this one
we somehow failed each other
Perhaps then
we would have known
how not to become strangers.
Perhaps in another lifetime…
